Many forest stakeholders now agree on the need to critically assess
when, where, how, to what extent, why, at what cost to whom and
for how long certification changed the ways forests are managed. In support of such assessments, this paper provides a critical description of known impacts of certification on the fates of natural forests in developing countries, along with a brief review of the literature on the evaluation of conservation interventions.
