In post-apartheid South Africa, the Rooibos tea industry is struggling to address stark racial disparities deriving from a history of exploitation and exclusion. This research employs the case of Rooibos to examine the impact of market-based approaches to sustainability on small-scale coloured producers. The study analyzes their experiences with five initiatives that sought to benefit from or improve access to socially and environmentally responsible markets.
